Wildcats Cruise Past Brentwood

Westminster is headed into the District 6 championship game after cruising past Brentwood in the semi-final match by the score of 5-0 at host site John Burroughs.

It was a perfect day for soccer with sunny skies and temps in the 60s. The recent rains had no impact since the ladies were playing on the very nice artificial surface at Burroughs. Westminster took immediate control of the game which forced the Eagles to drop back 9 players for defensive purposes. The early pressure led to a quick goal. At 3:20, Lauren Probst had the highlight goal of the game when she took Christine Ehrmann’s laser beam corner kick and banged it home with an off her feet header for a 1-0 lead. It took nearly 20 minutes to score again but the time wasn’t without opportunities. Shots from Leah Beck, Liz Crowell, & Katie Haverstick were on target but stopped by an alert Eagles keeper. Watson Woodward added offensive pressure with a couple of blistering shots that most keepers would have missed. At 21:31, Kenzie Pfitzinger scored on a sweet cross from Liz which Kenzie buried into the left corner for a 2-0 lead. Kenzie added another at 24:27 when she received a pass at the 30 yd line. Kenzie looked up and saw no one challenging her so she turned and ripped a hard left shot that floated just over the outstretched keeper and into the net for a 3-0 lead. Continuing the fun, Lauren added her 2nd at 26:10 when she took a cross from Kenzie at the 18 and slipped an easy shot under the keeper for a commanding 4-0 lead which the team carried into halftime.

As the 2nd half got underway the team continued to control the play but the level of intensity seemed to have fallen off a bit. A big lead this early in the match can cause that to happen. Regardless, the teams continued to play and Brentwood was not ready to call it a day. The Eagles tried to test the defense with outside speed but was quickly stifled. Attempts to jam the ball through the middle were just as easily rejected. Defensively, the Wildcats gave up no shots on goal to Westminster keepers Calvin or Wiens. Lauren collected the hat trick at 20:49 when she gathered up a cross from Katie, turned, and fired a shot from 10 yds past the defenseless keeper for her 3rd goal of the game and an overwhelming 5-0 lead. Giving Brentwood no room to breathe, the Wildcats wrapped up the game quietly.

The victory puts the Wildcats in the District 6 championship game for the 2nd year in a row. The game against rival Clayton will be played at 4pm on Friday May 16th at John Burroughs. We know from today’s game that Clayton will bring out lots of support. The team hopes the entire Westminster community will rise to the challenge and come out in full force to overwhelm the Clayton fans and cheer the Wildcats to victory.

Game Stats:

Goals: Pfitzinger (2), Probst (3)
Assists: Crowell, Ehrmann (2), Haverstick, Pfitzinger
Shots: Beck, Crowell, Haverstick, Martinez (2), Moore, Pfitzinger (3), Probst (4), Sherman, Woodward (2)
Game Winning Goal: Probst
Shutout: Calvin & Wiens

Boys' Volleyball Wins State Quarterfinals

The Boys Volleyball team had to face Kirkwood on their home turf Tuesday night in the State Quarterfinals. Both teams fought hard to force the match to three games. Erik Lewis started the third game with a huge block on Kirkwood's biggest hitter to set the tone. Juan Mundo, Ben Baldwin, and Lee Davis made perfect passes to Sang Jin Im, who set up huge kills for Matt Rohlfing and Adam Miller, who blasted through Pioneer blockers. Baldwin and Mundo came up with huge digs to keep the rallies going. The "Cats came away with the match and moved on to face St. Mary's in the Semi-Finals.

Bell State Champ!

Kevin Bell has a few nicknames and titles that he is called on the golf team. Add another title to his name now—State Champion! Huge congratulations to Kevin for coming in first place at the State Golf Tournament by shooting a 74 and 75 and winning as a sophomore by two strokes over 129 of some of the best high school golfers in Missouri. What makes the feat all the more impressive, is that the course is one of the hardest we have played all season, and the wind was blowing both days at times up to 20 mph. Congratulate Kevin on his tremendous accomplishment! Congratulations as well to the other two State qualifiers Alex Cusumano and Tim Reed for their strong play under very tough conditions. Alex shot an 82 and 83 for a solid showing at State and Tim came back with a strong second day shooting 84. Congratulate all of these young men for how well they represented Westminster both through golf and through their conduct this past weekend.

Team Districts

The boys' season continues! Yesterday, the fellows defeated Priory 5-1 (and it would have been 6-1, if we had let Nick O'Neal play his match point). A special note: Jimmy Myers returned to the court after his long time on the bench due to a back injury; and the team was glad to have him back and watch him win easily in straigh sets. Hunsicker and DeRousse pulled out their #1 doubles match in 3 sets. Keffer Munson got theirs in straight sets. Hunsicker and Keffer also secured straight set singles wins with solid play all the way around.

But anyway, the team now travels to Fulton, Missouri on Friday. Saturday morning, they will face Fulton, and if they win that match, they will compete against MICDS in the afternoon with hopes to make it to the final four round of the state competition.

Districts

Most the team fell in the quarterfinals held @ MICDS, but Joe Hunsicker advanced to the semis where he had a gut-wrenching 3 hour battle against Whitfield's Michael Gardner. Though Joe made a great comeback, fighting off several match points along the way, he couldn't quite pull it out, losing 4-6 in the 3rd set. Then Joe had to go out and play for 3rd place which he won nobly, and even though he did not qualify for state, he once again showed why he is one of the classiest tennis players on planet earth. Poised. Honest. Compassionate. Humble. Unassuming. Dedicated. Talented. The team thinks it's quite an honor to march into battle with Joe as their #1 representative.
