You Win Some - You Lose Some (3-4 again)

When cutting timber, it can fall away from you or it can fall upon you. In tennis, sometimes it falls your way, and other times you get smushed. The match could have fallen either way against Ladue, but they smushed us 4-3.

"D" is for "Defeat" but also for "Duffy"

Okay - so St. Joe is a whole lot better than us when it comes to smacking the ball around the court. And yet, in the middle of the pretty sound defeat - we did have a few bright moments. We had fun. We tried hard. We had great snacks furnished by Mrs. Schlafly. And we did have one court with a win!

A Loss to Viz - A Couple Fun Wins

While the ladies fell to Viz 2-5, there were 2 standout performances. Christine Schlafly and Lauren DeRousse paired up for a 6-0, 6-2 at number 1 doubles. But the story of the day was Ashley Segrave who made her Varsity singles debut this year @ #4 singles - and she came away with a big upset, 6-3, 6-3.

Buzzer-Beater, Barn-burner, Close Call, WIN

Call it what you will, the girls pulled it out...AGAIN! Meg Betz put a solid win in the bank early, and that deposit would be the only one until the last 15 minutes of the match. The team was down 1-3, and there were only 3 matches still being played - your Wildcats would need all 3 to win. Olivia Handler teamed with Bethany Leibovich for a quick and convincing victory. Then Lauren DeRousse, after fighting hard and well through 3 tough sets, picked up our next one. Her battle took about 2 1/2 hours! But then we still needed one more. Between Segrave's consistent ground game and Aucker's aggressive net play, the 2 brought home the final win against a tough Cor Jesu.

"S" is for "Smart" and for "Schlafly"

Parkway West outplayed us on almost every court. But thanks to Christine, the Cats did not go home empty handed. Schlafly played smart and crafty tennis. She approached deep to her opponent's backhand and then came in to volley the ball into the open court with soft hands and excellent placement. Wow. Smart. Consistent. Impressive. Nice playing Schlaf.

"Rassieur!"

There is a reason the team cheer was simply, "Rassieur!" The win against Clayton had a lot of good moments, but nothing was as sweet and dramatic as Emily Rassieur's battle. Christine Schlafly won her singles match in two wisely played sets; then Amanda Wiele and Jordan Montgomery teamed up to win their doubles match with a little comeback at the end; next off the court was the doubles pairing of Ashley Segrave and Rachael Aucker. But the team still needed one more win, and after losing @ #2 and #4 singles, it looked like things might not work out for the team win, especially since Emily Rassieur had lost the first set 2-6 and was down 1-4 in the second set. After fighting back with smart and consistent play to win the 2nd set, things got complicated in the 3rd when she started cramping up in both her calves. After an injury time-out, Emily showed a great deal of grit, focus, and determination to bring home a fun (yet painful) win on her court and for the entire team result. Bethany Leibovich and Mallory Alpert then also contributed a bonus win @ #3 doubles by winning a 3rd set tiebreaker - the final score with Clayton: 5-2 Wildcats.

MICDS and Burroughs Gave Us a Clinic

Yes. We got schooled twice this week, once by MICDS and once by Burroughs. But hey, we learned. We had fun. We enjoyed each others' company. We had some successes and improved. All in all, a good week even without one player being able to declare an actual win.

Barn Burner Pulled Out by "Rashley"

Even the score of 4-3 doesn't describe properly how close the match was. Your Lady Wildcats Tennis Team fought until 7:15 PM last night to pull out a fantastic win against Incarnate Word. Schlafly and DeRousse both won their singles in straight sets. But after losing the next three matches that came off the court, the Cats were down 2-3. Maggie Duffy paired with Bethany Leibovich fought to win in a 3rd set and evened the score. And then it came down to a highly dramatic match, and at the end of it, Rachael Aucker and Ashley Segrave showed they could play the clutch points when it mattered most. Hugs and Laughter followed!
