Wildcats Terrific Team Effort Topples Fort Zumwalt West Jaguars!!!

Tuesday, the WCA Lady Wildcats hosted Fort Zumwalt West at home. Last year, the ‘Cats traveled to Fort Zumwalt, and were beaten 9-0. Not this year! The ‘Cats once again came out roaring in the 2nd inning, scoring 7 runs, jumping ahead 7-0. Fine pitching and errorless fielding limited Fort Zumwalt scoreless until the 4th inning. By that time the ‘Cats had an 8-0 lead. After the Jaguars scored a run, the ‘Cats responded with 4 more of their own, upping the score to 12-1. Once again, hits and run production came from all over the line-up for the ‘Cats. The ‘Cats pulled off 2 successful suicide squeezes (Ellie Huffman and Jocelyn Sheffield). 8 ‘Cats recorded hits, with Shay Weststeyn and Hannah Worrell leading the way with 2 hits apiece. Ellie Huffman recorded 3 RBIs on her suicide squeeze bunt and a base hit, and Jocelyn Sheffield added 2 RBIs on her suicide squeeze bunt and a sacrifice fly. Shay Weststeyn also drove in 2 runners. Shay scattered 5 hits and struck out 7, giving the ‘Cats their 8th straight win. The ‘Cats now stand at 8-1, with their only loss in the first game of the season to Ursuline. Thursday, the ‘Cats travel to Principia. Last year Principia defeated the ‘Cats 6-2. Come on out to Principia and watch the ‘Cats turn it around.

Lady Wildcats End Season With Tough 1-2 Loss to Affton

Thursday, the Lady Wild Cats played Affton in the sectional match up at Lutheran South. The game was highlighted by the pitching duel between the ‘Cats Shay Weststeyn and the Cougars’ Kourtney VonBehren. They proved to be virtually equal as both struck out 10 batters. The Cats scored first in the 4th inning on a single by Shay Weststeyn, a stolen base by Shay, a passed ball to advance Shay to third, and a run-scoring ground ball to 2nd base by Hannah Worrell. The Cats held the lead until the top of the 7th inning, when the Cougars had 7th inning heroics for the 2nd game in a row. A home run with two out in the inning followed by a long single to right off the fence to deliver a 2nd run in the inning. The Cats mounted a bottom of the 7th rally, but were unable to push the tying run across. Hats off to the whole team, as the Cats never gave up, and gave 110% until the last out. The Cats end the season with a remarkable 16-5 record! Take some time today and find a Lady Cat softball player and congratulate them on a superb season!!

Softball Team Takes District Title!!!

Friday, the Lady Wild Cats traveled to John F. Kennedy to meet the Celts in the MSHSAA District 3 final. The ‘Cats won the game 1-0 for the District championship, upping their record to 16-4. The game was a classic fast pitch softball pitcher’s dual, with 28 strikeouts recorded in the game. Shay Weststeyn hurled her 2nd straight no-hitter, striking out 16 Kennedy batters, and striking out every batter in the lineup at least once. The Celts pitcher, Paige Miller was almost as good, yielding 5 singles and striking out 12 batters. Both teams traded zero’s on the scoreboard until the bottom of the 6th inning. Ellie Huffman got things started by beating out an infield base hit with 1 out. Ellie stole 2nd base, then advanced to 3rd base on a wild pitch. With Jordan Klein at bat, another wild pitch found Ellie racing home with the first and only run of the game. Shay then closed things out in the Kennedy 7th inning by striking out the side for the 4th time in the game. The ‘Cats now advance to the sectional game Wednesday against Affton at Lutheran South.
