Cats are caught napping

The Westminster Christian Academy Boys soccer team travelled to Parkway South yesterday and…lost to a more aggressive Patriot squad 2-1. After two strong efforts against Whitfield and Burroughs, the Cats seemed tired and less than motivated during much of the game vs the Patriots. It appeared that their eyes are on “districts” which begins Saturday.

The first 40 minutes found the Cats with little enthusiasm and only able to garner 4 shots on goal. It wasn’t until the 26:45 mark that the Cats put any pressure on the Patriot keeper and that from 30 yards out. The Patriots had similar difficulty mounting any true challenges for Cat’s keeper, Tim Reed. But at the 28:30 mark, and after sloppy passing in the Cats own end, a Patriot forward intercepted an errant pass and beat Reed to the lower left side of the net.

The second half seemed like an exact copy of the first 40 minutes. Six minutes in, the Patriots again took advantage of listless Cat play and beat Reed high right to take a 2-0 advantage. The 2 goal deficit seemed to spark the Cats though, as a determined Matt Hudnut stole the ball at midfield and crossed the ball from 45 yards out to Conner Hunsicker who in turn cleanly beat the Patriot goalie to the lower right. But that was all the Cats could muster for the rest of the match.

On a positive note, the Cats bench saw a lot of playing time. Austin Gantner, Jack Ross, Ethan Cobbel, Curtis Stump and Caleb Unser got well deserved minutes and all showed outstanding hustle and desire.

Bottom line: Off to “districts”!!!

Scoring summary:

28:10 PS 46:20 PS 47:50 WCA Hunsicker from Hudnut
