Bombers get clipped

After coming away with a victory against number 10th ranked Whitfield in the annual “Blue and Green” game, the Westminster Wildcats Boys soccer team continued their winning ways with a 3-0 smashing of the number 7th ranked Burroughs Bombers. Led by a solid defense and numerous offensive chances, the Cats shut-out the Bombers 3-0 and proved that they are ready for the upcoming district tournament. In the opening ten minutes of the game, the Cats came out somewhat slow including numerous giveaways resulting in dangerous scoring opportunities for the Bombers. Beginning in the 11th minute, the Cats seemed to settle into their normal passing style of offense. Juniors’ Jake Grimes, Connor Hunsicker and Matt Hudnut each challenged the Bomber goalie. At the 16:22 mark, the Wildcats earned their first corner of the match. After the perfect service from sophomore Jacob Appelbaum, the ball bounced around in the box and until Grimes deftly headed the ball to Hunsicker who found himself one-on-one with the goalie and cleanly slid the ball into the lower corner to give the Cats a 1-0 lead. The Bombers made numerous attempts to score in the last few minutes of the first half, but goalkeeper Tim Reed, as he did throughout the game, thwarted all shots. The Cats began the second half aggressively. Freshman Anthony Pritchett made an immediate impact when at the 43:40 mark, and after fighting off 3 Bomber backs, found a wide open Hunsicker who notched his second tally of the day again into the lower left corner of the Bomber net. Pritchett continued his outstanding play when at the 57:15 mark again redirected a slick pass from Hudnut to Hunsicker who garnered the hat-trick by finding the lower right corner of the Bomber net.
Although the Cats forwards were able to net three goals, the real display of ability and consistency was shown by the Cats’ midfield and defensive lines. The defense of Tim Miller, Matt Schwartz, Grimes, Michael Evetts, and Caleb Olson, held the barrage of Bombers in check throughout the game. Great foot skill and ability was shown in the midfield by Appelbaum, Hudnut, John Hunsicker, and Seth Lillenburg, Matt Baldwin, Jack Ross and Curtis Stump who each made beautiful passes and aggressive attacking runs that played an important role in the Cats’ win.

Bottom line: Coach Dan Legters has the Cats playing consistent and aggressive. Good job, Coach!!!

Scoring summary: 16:22 WCA Hunsicker from Grimes 43:40 WCA Hunsicker from Pritchett 57:15 WCA Hunsicker from Pritchett/Hudnut
