Cats win Blue/Green game
On Saturday, the Wildcats faced the #10 ranked Whitfield Warriors in the annual Blue-Green rivalry match. For the third time in the past four years, the Cats won the braggin’ rights and get to keep the trophy for the next year. The only goal was scored in the 37th minute after Tim Miller served a free kick into the box which Jake Appelbaum deflected on goal and Connor Hunsicker finished into the net.
The Whitfield soccer field was in great shape as always and the sun was shining brightly as the Cats and the Warriors battled it out. The defensive squad for the Cats consisted of Jake Grimes, Caleb Olson, Michael Evetts and Matt Schwartz as Matt Reilly was out with an ankle injury. Tim Reed was in goal. The Warriors tried over and over again to create scoring opportunities, but the Cats either stopped the ball or the Whitfield player or held their line causing the Warriors to be called off-sides. It was one of the best defensive matches the Cats have played all season which ended in a shut-out.
At midfield, the Cats line-up included Matt Hudnut, Timmy Miller, Jake Appelbaum and Seth Lillenberg. Connor Hunsicker and Anthony Pritchett started in the forward positions. Nick Arnold, Matt Baldwin and Curtis Stump also contributed significantly throughout the match. The combined efforts of all the midfielders and forwards were outstanding and in this writer’s opinion were more skilled player for player than their counterparts from Whitfield.
Overall the match was fairly even, but the Wildcats controlled the ball more. In the first half, the Cats had the cross wind heading in their direction of attack and the ball was on the Whitfield half most of the time. The Cats had several scoring opportunities early in the match when Jake Grimes made outstanding runs with the balls and worked give and goes with Tim Miller and/or Matt Hudnut, but each of the shots went wide of the net. The Cats also earned several corner kicks, but the Warriors managed to clear them all. In the 37th minute, the Cats scored the only goal when Timmy Miller served a free kick from the right side of the field to Jake Appelbaum in front of the Whitfield goal. Jake deflected a shot on goal and Connor Hunsicker finished it into the net. The first half ended with the score 1-0 in favor of Westminster.
The second half was an all out battle as the Whitfield squad lived up to their name as the Warriors. With the wind at their backs and the home fans cheering them on, the Warriors attacked relentlessly. But the Wildcats were indomitable and stepped up with confidence to every challenge Whitfield delivered. The second half ended with score still 1-0 in favor of the Wildcats. It was another great team effort and a step closer to being prepared for the upcoming District Tournament.
On Tuesday, the Cats face the #7 ranked Bombers of Burroughs at Westminster for the second time in the season. In the previous match, the Bombers won in double overtime by a score of 2-1.
The Wildcats’ first game in the post season district tournament is next Saturday at home against the University City Lions. Westminster is the 3rd seed and U City is the 5th seed.
Scoring summary: 37:30 WCA goal by Connor Hunsicker assisted by Jake Appelbaum
